GET YOUR HOME REMODELED DURING THE COLDER MONTHS SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE IT READY FOR SPRING AND SUMMER

Even in the warm climate of Southern California, the cool down and rain that is typical in the winter months can make a home remodel more challenging. However, this doesn’t necessarily preclude you from remodeling indoors during the winter so that you will have a new space ready for entertaining and enjoyment when the sun and warm temperatures come out again in the spring.

However, before you set your schedule and get to work, there are a few things you should take into consideration so that you can plan accordingly to have your home ready for spring and summer entertaining. Here are some tips to get you started.

Availability

Generally speaking, contractors and their crews are bound to have increased availability during the colder months since most construction and remodeling jobs take place during the warmer months of spring, summer, and fall. This will make it easier to choose the dates you want for your planned remodeling project.

However, you need to be careful to get bids and settle your dates well in advance. Because this season is slow for the construction industry, you may find that many contractors schedule vacations during the winter months.

Permits

Because construction is slow in the winter, you’ll be glad to find that obtaining permits will likely be a quick and relatively hassle-free process compared to other times of year. Still, you’ll want to make sure to get all necessary permits before starting your remodeling project.

Pricing

One of the best reasons to consider remodeling during the winter is because of the money you stand to save. You might be able to negotiate for lower bids from contractors simply because you know that this is their slow season.

You’ll also find that manufacturer prices tend to go up in early spring. This could mean you’re able to find bargain-basement prices on older stock.

On top of that, there is no shortage of seasonal sales during the winter months, not only prior to end-of-year holidays, but immediately following the turning of the New Year. In short, if you play your cards right you could save a ton of money on home purchases when you remodel in the winter.

Ventilation

This is a major concern for any homeowner interested in remodeling when the weather outside turns frigid. During warmer months you can simply open windows to vent fumes and dust that are common during renovations. What can you do in the winter?

You’ll want to start by sealing off the portion of the home where renovations are happening so that particulates don’t infiltrate your entire house. From there you can use a negative pressure fan setup, open a single window or door, and push all the fumes and dust out of the house in minutes.

With the proper equipment and a knowledgeable contractor on your side, there’s no cause for concern over fumes and dust during remodeling.

Scheduling

In addition to greater ease when it comes to scheduling a contractor, choosing to remodel during the colder months could fit better into your schedule, as well. With many businesses experiencing a slow-down during the winter months and some even offering employees time off for the holidays, winter is a great time to consider remodeling if you feel like you want to be available to answer questions and oversee progress.

Alternately, you may want to get out of the house and go on vacation while your home is being renovated. Either way, the winter season could provide the perfect opportunity.
